Here are a few symptoms to look for so that you can decide if you dogs illness is serious enough to warrant a visit to the Animal Hospital.

1. Bleeding – If your dog appears to be bleeding from the nose, mouth, rectum or genitalia.
2. Loss of Appetite – this would be a clue especially if your dog is usually a healthy eater until recently.
3. Water Consumption – If the dog is consuming more water than normal. Dogs will drink more in hot weather, but if you notice the dog drinking excessive amounts of water, see a Vet.
4. Fatigue – If the dog seems unusually inactive or tired.
5. Pain – If you notice that your dog appears to be in pain when you pet him/her.
6. Problems Urinating or Defecating - This is a sign that something is not right.
7. Disorientation or Agression - If your otherwise friendly dog seems to be moody, just not acting normal, this could be a sign of some sort of stress or other illness.
8. Unpleasant Discharge – if you dog has any sort of discharge, have this looked at.
9. Vomiting or Diarrhea – This could be a sign of intestinal issues.
10. Frequent Scratching – Could be a sign of fleas or a more serious skin irritation.
11. Dull Coat – Dull fur can be a sign that your dog is not as healthy as they could be.
12. Dry Nose – your dogs nose should be cold and wet. If it's not, this could be a sign of a problem.
13. Trouble Breathing – If your dog appears to be breathing heavily or seems to have a faster than normal heartbeat even at rest, this could be a sign of problems.

1. First and maybe the most important, make sure you have tags identifying your dog including information on how to contact you.

2. Some dogs suffer from motion sickness. If this is the case for your dog, try training the dog to enjoy riding in a car. Make it fun for the dog. Long before a trip, start driving around with your dog and increasing the time in the car each time. Also, make sure that the dog has been fed about 3 hours prior to setting off. There are some medications available for motion sickness for your dog. Check with your Veterinarian to find out what you should do.

3. Bring a roll of paper towels and some wipes to clean up any messes.

4. Buy an appropriate dog carrier for your trip. If you are traveling by plane, make sure to buy an airline approved dog carrier. Check with you specific airline.

5. If traveling by car, keep your dog safe in a dog car seat.

6. If you have an older dog that has trouble walking or a small dog that you're afraid might get away, consider a dog carrier on wheels or a dog stoller.

7. Keep your eyes on the road, not the dog.

8. Put the dog in the back seat, not on your lap or down by your feet. Pet disctractions do cause accidents.

9. Carry dog treats.

10. Take plastic bags to clean up after your dog.

11. Take advantage of rest areas to let your dog out of the car.

12. Always carry food and water with you. Dogs can become dehydrated very quickly.

13. Carry a leash and keep your dog on it at all times. Most cities, towns and municipalities have a law requiring the dog to be on a leash.

14. Research the availability of dog parks before you go to give your dog a chance to run around.

15. Carry a first aid kit for your dog in case of small incidents.

16. NEVER leave your dog alone in a car.

17. Carry some dog toys with you.
